PubMed and Discover Search Integration Restored

PubMed-Discover Integration Restored

The library is pleased to announce that the Discover integration with PubMed is finally back in action.

In 2020, the PubMed update to a new platform and changes in access controls forced the library to turn off PubMed-Discover record integration. This integration previously allowed South College PubMed searchers to find links in PubMed to journal articles that were freely available in South College library databases. Unfortunately, the library had to disable PubMed-Discover integration for longer than we had expected.

Now, a new setup is finally in place. Faculty and students can search PubMed and connect to the library’s Discover Search to check for library-provided full text by accessing PubMed using this URL: https://library.south.edu/PubMed.

Hyperdrive Your Courses: Hyperlinking to the Library's Resources

Are you an instructor interested in including links to library resources in your Canvas courses? Then join Jonathon Hudson, the library Electronic Resources Librarian, for an online in-service on how to link to library resources from Canvas on April 14^th at 10:30am EST.

The library uses OpenAthens authentication for off-campus access to our resources. OpenAthens also enables links to library subscription content that can be posted directly in Canvas courses for students. While linking to subscription content is primarily done with videos and ebooks added for specific courses, just about any library resource can be linked in Canvas.

The in-service, which will last 45 minutes and be presented online via Zoom, will cover creating links to library resources and how to include them in Canvas.

Digital Literacy: Skills for Navigating a Digital World

The digital environment is like a universe of its own, and those who engage in its territories should educate themselves about its rules and its lack thereof. In this world where people and their ideas interact, it is important to use technology responsibly, respectfully, and critically. Most of us encounter information in its digital form regularly on the internet, in our coursework, jobs, and through social media. Through technology, information is stored and shared. Digital SkillsIt's important in our modern world to know how to access, use, and produce digital information. While digital literacy encompasses basic technology skills, it's much more than that. Consuming and producing digital information effectively requires one to have critical thinking, communication, and relationship skills too. Here are the digital skills that Forbes Magazine (Marr, 2022) says that we need to participate in the digital world: Keeping on top of emerging new technologies Understanding what tech is available and how it can be used Using digital devices, software, and applications – at work, in educational settings, and in our everyday lives Communicating, collaborating, and sharing information with other people using digital tools Staying safe and secure in a digital environmentPrivacy and SecurityLots of information about our lives is stored in the form of digital information and is vulnerable to being accessed and shared by people who don't have permission to access it. Some of this permissionless access is inadvertent while other access is intentional and malicious. As our digital footprints have expanded and our use of technology grows, it becomes increasingly important to learn how to protect our personal information.
